"The Mez Amazement"

I just gotta tell you the latest:

The past couple of days Mez was driving herself (and everyone else) crazy by hauling off some of her babies to another spot in the room. For example, she kept dragging 3 or 4 to our bed, and leaving the rest behind in the kittening box. While it is a natural thing for momma cats to move their babies, it can also be dangerous – and I know some people have lost kittens that way! Not a good thing! Sometimes she would get so obsessed with moving them that she was getting rather forceful with what she was doing. At one point she even accidently dipped the hind-end of one of the kittens in her water bowl in desperation to move it! I finally decided the old adage applies: “If you can’t lick ‘em, join ‘em”. So, I moved them all, and made up a second bed close by so if she wanted to move them, she’d have a safe place to go with them, and not far away from the others.

We then observed. Sure enough! She moved a few of them, and laid down and nursed them. I mumbled out loud, “Are your kids driving you crazy? Are they making too many demands on your time? Can’t handle them all?!” She just looked at me and purred. She seemed happy, and no longer dragging them around, so I let her be, and thought I would just monitor them closely. Between the two kitten piles there were always 10 babies, so I was happy.

However, by this morning what I had observed, just blew me away! I watched her as she would lay with a group of kittens, nurse them… then get up and go nurse the other group of kittens. She’s been doing this consistently, and they are all fat and happy and no child is left behind! 

So, for all of you who asked how a cat does it when there are more kittens than there are nipples – Mez says it’s all about planning and strategic manageould be nominated as a candidate for the title “2008’s World's Greatest Mom”! <SMILES>ment!!  She is simply amazing! I think she is!

These pictures were taken when the kittens were only 1 day old! We could not believe how many there were. How many kittens do you count?
